18 Things to Do By Yourself

18 fun things to do whenever there's no one else around! - Miss Caly

With so much happening these days, I find that alone time doesn’t come as often as I’d like. I think a lot of us really are quite submerged in our social and work/school life that we tend to forget to do a little something for ourselves every once in a while. Life simply moves on so fast and it’s hard to keep up when we’re so caught up with other people and the problems surrounding us.

Spending some down time by yourself can be very beneficial in many ways. For one, it’s gold for just calming down. The idea sounds so simple that I think a lot of us often dismiss it among the chaos of every day. Being by yourself can help you figure out who you are, what you really want, what you’re purpose is, without the pressure or influences of those around you. I think that reflecting on your thoughts and doing something that truly makes you feel good is so important. You matter. Your hobbies, interests, beliefs, passions matter.

Today I thought I’d share with you a few things you can do to have some quality alone time. And by ‘quality’, I don’t mean procrastinating and mindlessly surfing Facebook or Instagram, but rather, real activities, things you can DO, not see. So the next time you’re home alone or you have a few hours to spare, here are some things you can do:

1. Build a FORTRESS

Come on, let’s take it back to childhood for a little while. Grab all those bed sheets and pillows, and make yourself a comfy crib so you can sit down and chill out. Make an entry door, a back door, a roof and a giant bed – go nuts. When you’re all settled down, simply relax. Grab that packet of chips, earphones and Netflix and watch away…

2. Go Song Surfing

Go on a quest to discover what kind of music you love, rather than listening to the ol’ ‘top pop hits’ all the time. Browse through all the genres out there – rock, blues, classical, indie… – who knows? You might fall in love with a particular style or band you’ve never heard before. I really recommend using free online streaming sites like Spotify. (Let me know in the comments if you know any other good websites!)

3. Have a dance party of one

You know what the beauty of being alone is? No one else is there to watch you. Take advantage of this, get your heart pumping and just let yourself go! Show some of those groovy moves you’ve got, that electric air guitar or that Michael Jackson moon walk.

4. Try on different outfit ideas

It’s time to work out that fashion style you’ve got! There are actually so many combinations you can make from basic top and bottoms. Find what kind of things you love and put them together to create a personality though fashion. It’s not about spending heaps of money and being at the top of the trends, but rather, making a statement of who you are though the way you dress.

5. Sing karaoke

YouTube is the home for instrumentals and Karaoke. Even if you’re not an amazing singer or musically gifted in any way, let it out, just let it all out. There is a concert crowd full of no one out there, waiting to listen to your musical voice.

6. Read about world events

Educate yourself on what’s happening in the world because there’s a lot happening in the world. What’s happening in the stock market, or in the country half way around the world, or in the world of politics or science? You might even find you have a passion for a certain topic. Knowledge is a gift. Why not use it?

7. Paint a “Picasso” artwork

Grab some paper, brushes and a whole load of paint and go crazy. Don’t even think about that you’re doing. Just splatter it everywhere until it’s all filled up. And there, you’ve created art.

8. Experiment with face paint or makeup

No, I don’t mean ‘caking’ foundation and eyeliner everywhere. I dare you to turn yourself into another creature. Let your face be a canvas for an artwork for a day and smother it in lots of vibrant paint and powder. I found some really beautiful makeup/facepainting art on my Pinterest that you might like to find inspiration from. Experiment, experiment, experiment!

9. Write a song

Start with a tune, some lyrics and turn your current feelings or thoughts into a work of music.

11. Write a letter to your future self

I came across this awesome website called Future Me, where you can actually write an email to yourself and it’ll send it to you on a certain date. It can be in a few months or even a few years! Tell yourself how you’re going, your current passions, aspirations and what you want to achieve. One day when you read it, it’s great to see how far you’ve come.

12. Write a short story

about the first object you see to your right. Get those creative juices flowing and you might surprise yourself with what your imagination comes up with.

13. Make something

DIY all the way! There are plenty of projects you can find on my blog or anywhere else on the internet, really. It might save you lots of money and is also perfect for passing time in a fun way.

14. Learn to draw

You might not be the best drawer today, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn. Again, I’ve posted a few tutorials on my blog here, but there are heeaapsss of tutorials everywhere, thanks to the internet!

15. Make your own scent

Mix all your favourite-smelling things to create your ultimate scent. Use anything that smells pleasant, from perfumes, to lemons to toothpaste. It’s probably best to use this a a room spray, not on skin, in case any of the ingredients cause irritation!

16. Write a poem

Express all those feelings and emotions into a beautiful rhythmic piece. Maybe you’ll be the next Keats or Coleridge.

17. Make a scrapbook

Grab all your favourite photo memories, patterned paper, pens and washi tape, and put them together to make your own sentimental book. I especially love doing this after I go somewhere nice – I print out the photos, decorate them and doodle around them, just for keepsake. It’s fun to look back on the things I did.

18. Last of all, start a blog

We all have something to give to the world and now here’s your chance to do it. Write about what you love, your interests, your beliefs. Like I said earlier, these things matter! It’s not even important how many views you get or how great the content is. I think that getting your voice out there is a very powerful thing to do in itself.

P.s. If you do decide to make a blog and need any advice, feel free to ask me, I don’t bite!

There you have it, a few things you can do when you’re all by yourself. See, you don’t need other people to have fun, it all starts on the inside. I hope you enjoyed these tips!

Stay inspired,

  1. I love all of these so much, I’m definitely going to give some of them a try 🙂 I’d add going for a run or some other exercise though, just because you can get some great thinking time from that 🙂 Future Me sounds awesome though, I definitely need to have a look at that!

    1. I’m glad you like this post. Agreed, exercise is also very important – great idea! I haven’t tried Future Me yet either, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind. 🙂
